10 Ideas for a Summer Wedding

Sunshine, warm weather, balmy night air; there is something about summer that is magical. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that summer is the most popular time of year for weddings. To make the most of your summer wedding, we have the following tips:

  1. Summer has beautiful weather. Use it. Even if you want an indoor wedding and reception, look for a venue that offers a lot of a natural light and great views of an outdoor setting. You do not have to sacrifice the benefits of an indoor setting (like air conditioning) in order to get the glory of summer as part of your wedding!
  2. Don’t let uninvited guests ruin your wedding. If you are having an outdoor summer wedding, there will be bugs. Plan accordingly. Incorporate citronella candles and torches into your décor and provide baskets of bug spray for your guests to use.
  3. Summer is all about bright, bold colors. Leave the pastels and pale florals for the spring and winter weddings. Summer is also a great time to use white to decorate your venue.
  4. Take advantage of the abundance of fresh produce in your wedding menu. New Jersey is not called the Garden State for no reason. Let your menu selections be heavy on the fruits and vegetables to give your guests the best tasting experiences. Skip the traditional icing or fondant decorations on your cake and select fresh berries instead.
  5. Bring a summer theme to your reception. Nothing says summer more than frozen margaritas, unless it is frozen watermelon margaritas.
  6. Talk to your DJ about summertime music. There are certain songs that are considered must-haves at summer parties. You probably want to include those songs in your summer wedding play list.
  7. Flip flops make great wedding favors for summertime weddings at beaches, lake sides, or anywhere the terrain is sandy. Guests are going to be wearing nice shoes to your wedding; having baskets of flip flops available give them an option other than bare feet and keep them from getting sand in their nice shoes.
  8. Add some summertime to your photo booth with props. You can choose a sophisticated theme or decide to do something silly like oversize sunglasses, flippers, and diving masks.
  9. Serve plenty of ice-water. Guests tend to select flavored drinks at wedding receptions, so have water available at the tables, keep someone refilling it, and have servers going through the crowds offering guests water.
  10. Think about wilting. Flowers. Hair. Makeup. Fabric. Lots of things wilt in the heat. Be realistic when you are planning your wedding look and think about whether you will still have the look you want hours into the reception and not just for the walk down the aisle. If you have your heart set on a particular look that will not survive the heat well, talk to your wedding vendors about how to incorporate elements of that look into other parts of the wedding.
