Your first dance as a newlywed couple is very special moment. If you are both good dancers and you already have a special song, then choosing a song for the first dance is a no-brainer. However, many couples do not have a single special song. They may, in fact, think of completely different songs when they think about being a couple. Even if a couple has a special song, it might not be a song that they feel is appropriate for the first dance at a wedding. Or one or both of the partners may not be a good dancer. All of these issues should impact the choice of first dance song. Fortunately, a great DJ, like Chris, can help you pick the perfect song for your first dance.
Think about the lyrics. A lot.
There are a lot of songs out there that we think of as romantic songs that are not romantic at all once you listen to the lyrics. Maybe they are actually creepy and somewhat violent. Perhaps the lyrics are extremely sexual, rather than romantic. Make a list of the songs you are considering for your first dance. Are these the lyrics you want your family and friends to picture you saying to your bride or groom? Are these the lyrics you want your children to see you dancing to at your 20 year anniversary? If not, it is not the song for your first dance. Does not mean you should not have the song at your wedding; just save it for later.

Do you have any romantic connotations with any prior boyfriends or girlfriends associated with the song?
This should go without saying, but if the song has ever been associated with a former love, do not have it be the song for the first dance at your wedding, no matter how much you love that song, no matter how perfectly it describes the two of you. Someone at your wedding is bound to remember and say something and nothing good will come of that.
-
Is the song super-trendy?
We are not about to insult popular music; songs get popular because they are good. However, we have all gotten tired of even a great song because it got played too frequently. For the rest of your life, when you hear that song you’re your first dance, you want to feel a little sentimental and romantic, not want to flip the station because you heard it six times already that day.
-
Does the song reflect you as a couple?
Some songs are classics that are chosen as first dance music by couples over and over again because they so perfectly describe so many people’s feelings when they get married. However, if the two of you are barely in your 20s, playing Etta James’ At Last as your first dance music might seem a little silly to you when you get older.

Can you dance well enough for the song you have chosen?
In this era of reality TV shows and choreographed wedding dance routines, the bar has been set high for wedding dances. However, not everyone can dance like that, and not everyone wants to. Be honest with yourself and each other about your dance capabilities and your willingness to learn new dances. If you are not a great dancer, Chris can help you pick a simple dance, like a waltz or a two-step that will allow you to perform a good partner dance without embarrassing yourselves in front of your guests. For some non-dancers, that is the best that they hope for in a first dance, and that really is okay!

Is it romantic?
Remember, you have your whole reception for fun, energetic, funky dances. Chris will work with you to make sure that you have all the music you need for any kind of dancing you want to do at your reception. But you will only have one first dance as a married couple. It may seem trite, but we have never seen a couple regret the choice to go with a romantic first dance.
The first dance can be nerve wracking, especially for people who are not used to dancing in front of others. It can also be a surprising source of controversy as couples discover that they do not agree about what is “their song.” Let Chris Marino (DJ/Owner) use his musical expertise to help you pick the perfect song for your first dance as newlyweds.
